“Sharp coupe looks and dynamic SUV mobility” have earned Mitsubishi Motors’ compact SUV crossover a prestigious ‘G-Mark’ commendation from the Japan Institute of Design.
Praised for its striking profile, multi-faceted functionality and ability to inspire a sense of adventure, Eclipse Cross has officially joined the ranks of Good Design alongside an amphibious bus, a bamboo bicycle and a Starbucks store.
The Good Design Awards were established in 1957 to drive creativity in Japanese industry, with the aim of enhancing overall quality of life. Now international in scope, the ‘G-Mark’ is an annual roll call of the very best in forward-thinking and functional design, encompassing everything from robots to rice cookers.
In the passenger car category, Mitsubishi’s Eclipse Cross impressed judges with the way in which “the design uses different cross-sections for the front and rear roof edges to create a coupe-like silhouette, while also providing the cabin space and comfort required in a SUV".
Other distinguishing features noted by judges included “all-wheel control technology1, which delivers an enjoyable, reassuring feel that elevates the driving experience; and connectivity2 that inspires fun new adventures”.
Reece Congdon, MMNZ Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, said the judges’ comments align with the reception of Kiwi motorists to the newest addition in Mitsubishi’s range.
“Eclipse Cross has been well received since its introduction in New Zealand early this year; it is an excellent example of form and function coming together in a vehicle that offers the best of both worlds – from SUV capability and coupe looks to five-star safety and style. It’s a vehicle designed for people who live life on the go, as many of us do today – all of which fits the remit of the judging panel for this award.”
Control and connectivity
1 - Eclipse Cross XLS and VRX All-Wheel Drive models feature Mitsubishi’s proven Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) – an integrated system that incorporates an electronically controlled AWD system with ABS, Active Stability Control and Active Yaw Control.
S-AWC offers the driver three modes:
Normal: 4WD performance across most conditions.
Snow: Best suited for snowy conditions and greater stability on slippery roads.
Gravel: High-traction off-road ability.
2 - ‘Connectivity’ is enabled variously through technology and design. Eclipse Cross features Touchpad Commander, which enables efficient, fingertip operation of Mitsubishi’s Smartphone link Display Audio (SDA) interface.
The VRX model also features Head-up Display directly in front of the steering wheel. This projects important information to the driver, allowing them to maintain attention on the road.
To enhance enjoyment of the journey, a dual sunroof can be tilted open for ventilation on warm days or the shade fully retracted for those who don’t want to block out the sun.
